WILD RICE
Almost all wild rice is cultivated, but the real thing inside this package grows naturally on the lakes of central and northern Canada. Wild rice is one of a handful of grains native to North America. It’s harvested every year during the month of September. The grains naturally reseed themselves each year and need specific weather in early June to facilitate a good crop. The wild rice is dried and toasted on steel over a wood-burning fire to help preserve its amazing shelf life. Wild rice can be stored indefinitely.
TASTING NOTES
Many important minerals are found in wild rice – two in significant concentration are Calcium which helps prevent fatigue and Vitamin C which helps reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. The flavour is nutty and has an aroma found in certain types of black tea. It can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert. We enjoy using it in salads, risottos, soups, fried rice dishes and especially as a cold or hot breakfast cereal which can easily be prepared in advance for the rest of the week.
